Humanistic approach
Counselling embraces a number of different approaches such as Humanistic, Psychoanalytical, and Behavioural. As a counsellor working primarily with Humanistic models I believe in our in-built capacity and drive as human beings to develop and reach our full potential even with especially difficult past experiences or present circumstances. I regard every individual as a unique human being stemming both from our innate makeup and our particular mix of personal and life experiences. I find it a great privilege supporting clients to make changes and find ways forward in their lives that seem right to them.
Integrative counsellor
As an Integrative counsellor I have the flexibility to draw on different therapeutic approaches and skills in a way that can be tailored to your particular needs. My core training is in three Humanistic models - Person Centred, Transactional Analysis and Gestalt. In addition I have completed training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and an 8 week course in Mindfulness practice both of which I integrate in to my practice too.
Lifespan Integration
I also offer Lifespan Integration (LI) therapy to some clients which is a unique and gentle way of working that helps to heal trauma and a range of other, often associated, therapeutic issues. This approach involves repetitions of a Time Line of the client’s memories which show their body-mind system that time has passed. Seeing the panorama of their lives in this way proves to clients that they have survived no matter how traumatic their pasts. They are also able to see they are actually living in present time, rather than the past still feeling like the present and thus controlling thoughts, emotions and actions. As clients connect the different parts of their life into a coherent whole this allows the newly integrated Self to function more positively in the present and establish better quality relationships. LI is a more structured way of working than conventional talking therapies and in my experience can be very effective in resolving outdated and life limiting patterns and beliefs.
Continuing professional development
In line with the BACP ethical framework I am committed to regular continuing professional development (CPD) to update my knowledge and skills. Some of the therapeutic issues I have covered in CPD include: Addiction, Attachment and Attachment Disorder, Autism, Childhood Sexual Abuse, Depression, Dissociative Disorders, Fear and Anxiety, Identity, LGBTQ, Movement in the Therapy Space, Narcissists and Their Children, Shame, Suicide and Risk, and Trauma including Collective and Intergenerational Trauma.
Voluntary counselling practice
During my professional training I worked as a volunteer counsellor at my local hospice working primarily with bereaved individuals. I then worked for five years at Carers Support West Sussex. This organisation offers a wide range of services, including counselling, to carers from all communities across the county.
Other work experience
Before qualifying as a counsellor I worked for many years as a research analyst in the corporate sector. I was also involved in the voluntary sector in the UK and Spain supporting men and women with their practical, spiritual and emotional needs.
